Omer has spent most of his life right here. He describes a series of blacksmiths stretching again generations.

“My father’s grasp’s grasp was an apprentice right here through the Greek occupation,” he says, referring to the Greek occupation of Izmir between 1919 and 1922. “Then got here my father’s grasp, my father, myself, and now my son.”

The workshop’s historical past predates the Akdemir household. In response to Omer, a person named Sabri Alim was an apprentice there through the Greek occupation, and later took over from his personal grasp, Suleyman Acarlar. In 1955, Omer’s father, Suleyman Akdemir, arrived from Konya and commenced working underneath Sabri as an apprentice. He ultimately took over the workshop himself, earlier than passing the craft to his son Omer.

The household can not set up that each era labored on this actual room; what has endured is the blacksmithing custom inside Kemeralti.

Omer studied blacksmithing at vocational highschool and later skilled in lathe operation, however says the workshop was his actual schooling.

When he started, the workshop produced shoe-sole slicing blades, tobacco needles, and agricultural instruments. Laser slicing ultimately displaced the blades they made for shoemakers. Tobacco farming declined. Different merchandise merely stopped being ordered.

If that disappearance bothers Omer, he reveals little nostalgia for it.

“I’m open to progress of any variety,” he says, persevering with to work as he talks. “Should you keep fastened in a single place, you can’t develop. The work we used to do disappeared. What had been we presupposed to do, insist on making issues nobody wanted?”

Nor does he see something notably radical in his son’s use of the web. To Omer, it has merely modified who can discover them.

“Suppose somebody in a village in Kastamonu needs one thing customized,” he says, referring to the province in northern Turkiye. “Below regular circumstances, that particular person might by no means attain me. However by the web, they do.”

He gestures in direction of the workshop. “And since we now have no scarcity of craft talent, we are able to make no matter anybody asks for.”

Nearly on cue, the automated shutter opens. A person walks in carrying an previous axe with a free deal with.

Omer takes it to his workbench and begins repairing it. The client, in the meantime, appears to be like round. His consideration strikes from the on a regular basis instruments in direction of the swords and outsized axes.

“Did you actually make these right here?” he asks.

A couple of minutes later, his axe repaired, he disappears again into Kemeralti.
